FRED BECOMES THE SECOND HURRICANE OF THE 2015 ATLANTIC SEASON .View more


As of early Monday morning Fred has been upgraded to a Category One hurricane. 

Fred is located just off the western coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean, near the Cape Verde Islands.

The latest advisory on Fred had sustained winds of 80 mph with higher gusts.

 Its movement is to the northwest at 12 mph.Fred will  impact the Cape Verde Islands off Africa's western coast today, bringing the potential for 4-6"+ of rain, large waves, storm surge, and hurricane force winds. 

It has no bearing whatsoever on Florida's weather right now and is not expected to in the long-term forecast either.  In fact right now it's more than 4,000 miles away from Fort Myers, Florida.  

Though the official forecast cone from the National Hurricane Center has Fred trending toward the west, as late as Friday it will still be in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and no threat to Florida. - Check out the NBC2 Interactive Hurricane TrackerBy Wednesday Fred will move into an area with higher wind shear and cooler sea surface temperatures and is therefore expected to weaken.

 Fred should degenerate into a tropical depression by next weekend.
