WOMAN ACCUSED OF DUI MAN SLAUGHTER HAD PRIOR DUI ARREST.READ more

A Fort Myers woman is accused of driving drunk when she hit and killed a man on I-75 in Collier County.

The man's wife was sent to the hospital in critical condition.

Samantha Robson, 34, was arrested early Sunday by the Florida Highway Patrol. She made her first appearance in court Monday afternoon.

The judge set the bond at $730,000 for five DUI-related charges.

Her attorney said between Robson being a real estate salesperson and a waitress, Robson won't be able to afford it.While Robson sits behind bars, a whole community is mourning.

As Pastor J.R. Pagan is getting ready to have his first service in the church's new building Sunday, he can't help but think about two people who will be missing."This is tough, because church is a family and you get attached to everybody, and when everybody goes through something like that, it's like someone in your own family, blood family, something like that happened to them."Leandro Benitez died in the crash. His wife Marcela Ortega is fighting for her life at Lee Memorial Hospital."She always has a smile on her face," Pagan said.

Car trouble forced the couple to pull off the highway. While they were standing outside the vehicle, Robson's vehicle drifted onto the shoulder and struck them, according to FHP.

Robson was drunk at the time, troopers say. Her attorney, Sawyer Smith, said his client is strapped for cash and won't be able to pay the bond. He said her family is shocked, but NBC2 discovered this isn't Robson's first offense.

She was arrested in Orange County for DUI in 2014."There's a considerable difference between a simple DUI and a DUI that causes the loss of life," Smith said. The life of a 52-year-old man who Pagan said worked a lot to support his family. A man loved ones are all grieving, except maybe the woman he loved the most.

Ortega has yet to hear of her husband's death."It's going to be a long process. We need to be there for her," Pagan said.

Court documents confirm that while on probation for her first DUI, Robson tested positive for cocaine. Smith was asked if Robson had tried to get help before Sunday's arrest, but he said he wasn't ready to talk about that yet.
